  • The Race Home
  • Kristi :  Wait for me! I am supposed to win too!
  • Annemarie: I bet i can beat you to the corner!
  • Ellen: You always say that
  • Annemarie and Ellen are happily racing down a Copenhagen street from school to home. Kirsti, Annemarie’s younger sister, struggles to keep up and is annoyed about being left behind.
  • Slide: 2
  • Confrontation with the soldiers
  • Ellen: *(nervously)* We are just playing...sir.
  • Nazi Soldier: Halte! Why are you running? Where are you going in such a hurry?
  • Kristi: I wasn't scared! They looked silly!
  • The girls are suddenly stopped by Nazi soldiers.The tension rises as Ellen becomes nervous and Kirsti, unaware of the danger, speaks boldly. This event shows the danger of the German occupation.

  • Two German soldiers block the girls' path
  • All: Oh no!
  • At the encounter, the girls know they could be in serious danger.

  • Ellen: Why do they hate us?
  • Annemarie: I don't know. But i won't let anything happen to you.
  • After the encounter, Ellen expresses concern about being Jewish under Nazi rule. This moment shows how the fear affects the characters personally.

  • Ellen: They were scary. what if they come back?
  • The girls return home and talk more about how things have changed since the Nazis arrived. They realize they can’t act freely anymore. This emphasizes the loss of childhood innocence.

  • Annamarie: (thinking) : Will everything ever go back to how it was?
  • Annemarie's mother: It is wise to be a little careful. We live in dangerous times. You girls must understand that.
  • You must be careful what you say. And whom you say it to.
  • Annemarie's parents talk about the political situation. They know their Jewish friends, like the Rosens, could be in serious danger. This adds depth to the family’s awareness and concern. The chapter ends with Annemarie reflecting on how her world has changed. There is a feeling of fear and uncertainty about the future.
