  • Due to his outstanding behavior, Tommy Joad received an early release from prison. After the bank confiscated the land, his family moved to his Uncle John's farm, leaving his family's farm abandoned. He resolves to go to Uncle John's the next morning.

  • Tommy officially isn't allowed to leave the state, but his family intends to relocate to the San Joaquin Valley where a government program promises a future for farmers who have been uprooted. The family travels 2,000 miles in a little jalopy Hudson Super-Six truck.

  • The Joads started off on Route 66. The night before they depart, Grandpa Joad had a stroke and passes away. The Joads are hearing rumors that there aren't enough jobs in California after all as they travel. As they go on, Grandmother passes away, Sairy Wilson becomes too ill to travel, and Noah leaves the group.

  • The Joads encounter unfriendly villagers and dishonest police officials at the Hooverville camp. Casy is sentenced to prison after accepting responsibility for hitting a deputy. The Joads relocate to the migrant community of Weedpatch. Because the normal employees are on strike, they are given the opportunity to labor harvesting peaches. A police officer strikes Casy, killing her, and Tommy detonates, killing the cop.
  • While Tommy recovers from his wounds, the Joads relocate to a cotton field where he hides. The Wainwrights and the Joads travel in the same boxcar. Rose of Sharon gives birth to a stillborn child after losing out on yet another job chance. To assist the migrant laborers, Tom chooses to carry on Casy's. The Joads leave the boxcar as floodwaters surround it.
