Faber
As Montag and Mildred spent the evening reading books, Mildred was confused and didn't want to continue reading. Montag however, was determined and wanted to find someone who can teach him about books. While they were reading, they ignored the sniffing of a dog outside (the mechanical hound).
Why is this so hard? I give up!
When did I get this numb??
Montag remembered an old man named Faber that he met a year ago. Faber had a book hidden with him and recited a poem to Montag. Surprised with himself, Montag wasn't angry with the man for having a book with him.
Denham's Dentifrice! Denham's Dentifrice!
Someone get the guards! This man is crazy!
BIBLE
SHUT UP! I'M TRYING TO FOCUS!
When Montag calls Faber and asks him if there are any copies of the Bible left in town, Faber gets angry and thinks that Montag is trying to set up a trap for him. So. Montag decides to go to Faber himself.
Montag realises how numb he is. He then remembers a childhood memory of him trying to fill a sieve with sand. To Montag now, the sand represents the knowledge he seeks, and the sieve represents his brain trying to attain and grasp the knowledge.
Montag tries to read and memorize a passage from the bible, but he gets distracted by an advertisement for toothpaste. He stands up, screams at the advertisement to shut up, and waves the bible at the gasping passengers before he gets off the subway. This shows us that that society doesn't allow people to think or concentrate on anything.
