“Hey, Alex!” Said his friend Josh with a smile. “ Are you excited for grade six?”With hesitation Alex spoke back, “Yup sure am!” As those words flew out of Alex’s mouth all he thought about was how hard this year was going to be. “Ok class everyone in a line, let's go inside” Mrs. Lee, who was their new teacher this year, said with an upbeat voice.

Today was Alex’s first day of sixth grade! This past summer, he couldn’t stop talking about his friends Amber and Josh. Although as the countdown to school became closer and closer, he started to do a lot of thinking…And as the first day of school arrived, Alex changed a lot. Normally, this day is filled with excitement or even nervousness, however this year he was feeling a rather different emotion. He was feeling determined, Alex was sick of being second best and wanted to be first! This year, he wasn't going to let anything get in his way.
When they walked into class, Alex picked his seat far away from his friends so he wouldn't get distracted. His friends noticed this and figured he just wanted some space.“Hey, don’t you want to see us? Amber said.Alex quickly made up a lie and stated. “Oh, I just want to be near the teacher so I can ask more questions. Amber believed him and nodded her head in understanding.
Although Alex's excuse did seem reasonable at the time to his friends, they noticed he didn’t play with them as much as he did a recess and instead was by himself. From Alex's perspective, he felt guilty for leaving his friends, even though he kept telling himself it was the only way to achieve his goal. This guilt made it hard for Alex to face his friends even out of the classroom. He tried to convince himself it was better this way.
