  • Welcome viewers! I’m your host, Faisal. Today we explore herbal medicines and their role in healthcare. Joining me are Dr. Khalaf, director of the Botanical Medicine Research Institute, and Professor Mohammed, chair of the Medical History Department at Cambridge University. Thank you both for being on the show.
  • My pleasure.
  • Glad to be here.
  • Host: Dr. Khalaf, let’s start with the basics. What are herbal medicines?
  • erbal medicines use plants, or parts of plants, to prevent and treat illness or promote wellness. Humans have used herbal remedies for thousands of years. Many cultures developed traditional medicine systems incorporating locally available plants. Some well-known herbal medicines include turmeric, echinacea, ginger, and peppermint.
  • Early medical texts document herbal remedies used in ancient India, China, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. The Middle Ages saw cultivation of medicinal herb gardens in Europe, and influential writings by Hildegard of Bingen. The 19th century herbal medicine revival increased interest in plant remedies and homeopathy in the West.
  • Host: How did herbal medicine traditions evolve over time? Professor Mohammmed?
  • Host: Thank you Dr Khalaf and Professor Mohammed for a highly informative discussion about herbal medicines, their history and future possibilities. We will continue to explore natural remedies and integrative health approaches on the show. Please join us again!
