In the beginning of the chapter Bud is sleeping under a christmas tree after he ran away from the Amoses and beat up their child. When Bugs, his friend from the orphanage, sneaks up on him. Bugs gets Bud and tell hims that he is a hero and wants to help him move west. Bugs had to retrain Bud when he was sleeping because he slept with a knife.
To go west they needed to go on a train so they camped out in a Hooverville. They were hungry so they had to eat the soup, but it came with a cost. They had wash all the dishes with 2 other kids. Bud got paired up with the girl and Bugs with the boy, when Bud and the girl were washing dishes she kept trying to get close to him and hold his hand. They had small talk, but then they kissed.
After all of that Bud went to sleep with his suitcase that he brought everywhere because it had valuable stuff inside from his mom who died. Then Bugs woke up Bud all of a sudden for they can go on the train that was leaving earlier than expected. He left a flier from his suitcase in the room he was in and another boy gave it to him, this slowed him down alot. There were also police that stopped them, but most of them quit. That made him late for the train and fail to get on. He was sad and he hid in the woods from the more cops that came, they terrorized the city.
