After the Revolutionary War, the 13 states were in debt. They solved their problems in one of two ways:1. Printing money2. Raising taxes on their citizens
Massachusetts farmers struggled after the war because prices for crops had fallen, and many of them were deeply in debt. Even paying mortgagesand other debts.
Massachusetts decided to solve its debt problem by taxing its citizens. The state government was based in the East in Boston. The taxes they put in place fell on the farmers who mostly lived in the western part of the state.Massachusetts courts began to confiscate farmers’ homes and send them to debtor’s prison because they couldn't pay them off.
We should solve our problems peacefully and send petitions to the state government in Boston. (but the Boston government did not listen.)
Daniel Shays created an army of farmers he led to close down courthouses so farmers wouldn't lose their farms nor go to jail

Unfortunately the Articles of Confederation made the national government weak and had no money to raise an army to help
Since the national government couldn't help, Massachusetts made it's own army to defeat Shays and his farmers.
All of this proved what a weak government does. So nationalists opted to make a stronger national government.
