Rico and Zan meet at their high school, they are both seniors and take classes together. Rico doesn't really have any friends, her brother is her only friend and she works a lot because she has to help her mom with the bills. Rico doesn't have a dad and her mom gets sick a lot. Zan is really popular. He is rich and is the quarterback on the This is important because when they start to be friends, it sets up the rest of the book and what happens.
Rico's Situation
On Christmas Eve, Rico sells two lottery tickets to a customer, who uses Rico's birthday as the number, then the lady gives her one. Rico's doesn't win, but the lady's ticket does. Zan is there at the time, but doesn't know about the two tickets. When the old lady doesn't come forward, so Rico has to find out who she is so the store will get a bonus and she hopes she will get a bonus too. Rico needs the extra money to be help her mom and to give her a brother a better life than she's had.
The gas station where Rico works is an important setting for many scenes. She has to work after school and then go home to take care of her younger brother. She has to help her mom pay the bills because her mom's job at a hotel doesn't pay well.
Zan gets involved and helps out
Rico knows that Zan is a computer genius and she asks him to hack into the gas station's cameras from Christmas Eve to help her narrow down and find the person who bought the winning ticket. He doesn't take her seriously at first, but then he says he'll help her. Zan is able to find the license plate of the cab the old lady took on Christmas Eve and he helps Rico find out her name and address. This scene is important because if Zan didn't help, Rico would never find her before the lottery ticket expires.
Jax gets really sick
Ethel is important because she gives Rico hope. She was kind to Rico when she gave her the extra ticket. When they go to her house , they find out she's moved. Rico and Zan find out she's living with her son but she had died and he doesn't know about the ticket. This scene is important because Rico starts to lose hope, but Zan boosts her and says he'll keep helping. They find out Ethel's things are in a storage unit and Rico wants to break in, but Zan doesn't. Then ZAN SHOWS HER THAT HE HAS THE WINNING TICKET - He bought it, not Ethel, and he's had it the whole time. They get in a big fight. But Zan makes a trust and gives Rico all the money for her family. She can pay the bills and have money for college for her and Jax.
Rico - For Better or Worse
Rico changes for the better in the story. I chose this symbol of a heart with hands because she learns to trust and love people because of Zan. The handshake represents their friendship and how it grows into love. Before she met him, Rico didn't trust anyone because she had a hard life and everyone had let her down. Zan shows Rico that it's ok to trust people by being there for her and loving her. Their trust and friendship turns to loveRico makes Zan brave enough to stand up to his dad. He goes to college instead of working for the family. Rico learns that Zan's family isn't perfect because they are rich and all that matters is thatthey support each other and are there for each other.
Rico's brother Jax has been getting sick a lot. Zan's sister is a doctor and helps him once, but then he gets really, really sick and has to go to the hospital. This is bad because it's expensive and Rico's mom doesn't have health insurance. Rico really wants to find Ethel now to see if she'll give her some of the winning money to take care of Jax and help pay for the medical bills. She feels like she hasn't been a good sister.
