Cory questions Troy after feeling unloved and constantly criticized by him. Cory asks, “How come you ain’t never liked me?” (Wilson 38). This proves that Cory feels rejected and hurt by his father’s treatment. This also shows that Cory wants Troy’s love and approval, but Troy struggles to show affection.

In the play Troy confesses to Rose that he has been seeing another woman and that she is pregnant with his child. Troy says, “I’m trying to find a way to tell you…I’m gonna be a daddy. I’m gonna be (Wilson 63). This proves that Troy knows he betrayed Rose and their marriage. This also shows how his selfish decisions hurt his family and destroy the trust Rose had in him.

In the play Troy speaks to death after surviving many hardships and struggles throughout his life. Troy says, “Come on! Anytime you want! Come on. I be ready for you” (Wilson 83). This proves that Troy is fearless and refuses to be intimidated by death. This also shows that Troy sees life as a battle and believes he must always fight to survive.
