The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic. Which started on August 13, 1961. The Berlin Wall completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin

More than 2 million people from East Berlin visited West Berlin that weekend to participate in a celebration. People used hammers and picks to knock away chucks of the wall. While bulldozers and more pulled down section after section. Soon as the wall was gone and Berlin was united for the first time since 1945. Some people call it the greatest street party in the history of the world.

People wanted to leave because there wasn't a lot of money and good basically original food going around. 5000 people tried to escape with a death toll of 600.

Even though most thought of the Berlin Wall as a bad thing for the most part. But the wall sepearated East Berlin and West Berlin. In many ways it the perfect symbol of the Iron Curtain that seperated the democratic western countries and the communist countries of Eastern Europe throughout the Cold War.
