  • Explanation: In Act 2 of the crucible, it starts out with Elizabeth and John Proctor arguing over Elizabeth's suspicions of John and Abagail having an affair again. Then, Mary Warren enters and informs them of her role as a court official during witch trials. Shortly after,(Cell 1) hale enters and talks to them about their absence from church and their unbaptized son. John responds with it being because of his dislike for Parris which Hale responds with the "theology is a fortress" quote. After that, the conversation turns into John telling proctor that Abagail is lying about pretty much everything and it has nothing to do with witchcraft. Hale asks why John did not say this sooner where John says the "daft with this nonsense" quote. Then, after this, (Cell 2) Giles comes along and tells John that his wife was taken by Ezekiel and says "she was only reading books". Very shortly after Giles enters, Ezekiel enters with a warrant to take Elizabeth and put her in jail to wait for a trial saying "I must do as I'm told" and Elizabeth says Abagail must be "ripped from this world" Then, after everyone leaves John, having had his wife just taken, goes to Mary and tells her that she's going with him to court to testify that Elizabeth is innocent and Mary had made the poppet. This is where Mary Warren breaks down and says "I cannot" on repeat.
