Liesel Meminger and her brother are on the way to meet their new foster parents. On the way, Liesel's brother dies and she never sees her mother again after this day. This is her first PUSH factor to leave Nazi Germany.
PULL
Liesel's new foster father Hans, takes in a Jew named Max. Liesel and Max become close friends and read together in the basement. Liesel treats Max as a Brother. Max's mistreatment at the hands of Nazi Germany is another PUSH factor.
PULL
During a bombing raid, Himmel Street is hit and destroyed. Everyone that Liesel knew and loved is now dead. She is left alone and has no family left nor any ties to Germany now. This is her final PUSH to have no reason to stay in Germany.
PULL
Max comes to find Liesel after being freed from Dachau. She thinks of Max as a brother. He can only have a free full life outside of Germany due to anti-Semitism. This is a PULL to start new together in Australia where anti-Semitism was not a problem.
Alex Steiner
Liesel's beliefs also do not fit that of most people in Germany. She did not support Nazi Germany ideas and praised books and reading about all types of people. Australia can PULL her to move by having more opportunity for her education. Australia is a multicultural country with good education.
After WW2 Germany was suffering and had no money. Australia on the other hand was a land full of opportunity for Max and Liesel. It was a prosperous country after the war. They could both immigrate to Sydney and start new. This is the last PULL factor.
