- She dreams of a more luxurious life, including lavish men and dancing, which was practically unattainable for a woman of her lack of wealth.
- Her husband manages to obtain an invitation to an event of the style she adores, however instead of being ecstatic at her dream becoming a reality, she realizes she does not own a nice enough dress.
- After she purchases a dress of her liking, she realizes she has no jewelry to adorn the cloth with. Her husband suggests visiting her rich friend and borrowing a few pieces from her. She instead found a necklace adorned with diamond, and was lent the single piece.#160;
- On the day of the party, she believed she was the most beautiful there. All the men ogled her, and attempted to introduce themselves as well as dance with her.#160;
- After the seemingly perfect party, Mathilde realizes she has lost the necklace at some point. Loisel backtracks all of the destinations of the night before, yet finds nothing. Instead of informing madam
- Mathilde has finally just about paid off her debt, and runs into Forestier, to which she proudly explains her buying a new necklace. After hearing this, Forestier explains that the necklace was fake and was forth about 16% of what the replacement cost.
