- Sam Houston was born in Rockbridge County,Virginia in 1793
- Houston did not enjoy farming,so he ran away to live with the cherokee for three years.He learned the language and way of life, enjoyed hunting , and developed a strong bond with the cherokee people. Chief Oolooteka adopted him and gave him the name Colonneh , The Raven.
- When war broke out between the U.S and great britain in 1812, 19year old Houston neededhis mother´s permission to enlist. She agreed with a warning ; Her door would always be open to the brave but never to a coward . When Houston´s brothers criticized him for enlisting as a private and not an officer ,he replied ,You don´t know me now,but you shall hear of me ¨
- Houston studied law in Nashville, was elected to congress for two terms, and served as Tennessee governor. He married Eliza Allen in 1829, but they separated only three months later.
- when he arrived, tensions between Texians and the Mexican goverment were boiling over. Houston became one of the main Texas leaders, serving as a delegate to the Convention of 1833 and then as commander in chief of the revolutionary army.
- Houston served honorably, rising from private to officer quickly . He fought in the battle of Horseshoe Bend , where he received three life-threatening wounds. His heroism caught the attention of future president andrew Jackson , who became a mentor to him and encouraged him to begin a career in politics
