  • The Capture in Africa
  • Aboard the Slave Ship
  • The Conditions of the Middle Passage
  • The Spanish arrived in Africa and stole many men, women, and children. The captured Africans were then marched onto a slave ship to begin the journey to America known as the Middle Passage.
  • The Conditions of the Middle Passage
  • Once on the slave ship, the men were sent down to the lower deck, and the women and children stayed on the upper deck. The crew would mentally and physically abuse them. They would force the men to dance for their entertainment and to make them stay fit.

  • The conditions on the ship during the Middle Passage were inhumane. It was hot, stuffy, foul-smelling, and extremely crammed, which caused diseases to spread quickly. The slaves were shackled together, starved, and abused. There was only a tub used to go to the bathroom, and children often fell into it.
  • What Happened to the Slaves in America?
  • Because they were starved, many slaves tried to sneak food, and were flogged if caught. Some jumped into the sea, and chose death over slavery. About 20% of slaves died from diseases, starvation, or suicide on the Middle Passage before reaching America.
  • At the auctions, people would bid on the slaves. They were bought and sold as property, and families were torn apart without care.
