- I will create everything. I am Io. I will create Sky Father and Earth Mother first.
- We have to live in the dark because our parents are physicaly together!
- We should separate or kill them so we can get light!
- In Maori culture, it is believed in the beginning, there was nothing until the creator Io created everything and anything.
- Sky Father and Earth mother embraced each other and united. This led to producing many offspring on Earth.
- The embrace of the Sky father and Earth mother blocked the sun's rays from the offspring they made. The children became angry and wanted to separate the parents, or even kill them.
- Tane, an offspring of Sky Father and Earth mother decided he would separate the parents after many failed attempts by his siblings.
- Tane separated the parents and let the Earth have light. “Soon, and yet not soon, for the time was vast, the Sky and Earth began to yield,” he said. He separated the Earth from the sky. During the separation, Earth mother bled and this now symbolizes the importance of red in their culture.
- This is a representation of Maori people eating a traditionally cooked food called Hangi. The Maori people believe this meal is cooked from within the Earth.
