Long ago in a dense forest, there lived a parliament of owls who watched over the land, protecting it from outsiders.
Until a cast of falcons decided to move into the forest. The leader of the owls, Chief, knew there would be trouble, but he decided before consulting the falcons, he would talk to the owls.
The next day, Chief held a secret meeting, and invited only his most trusted friends, Redwood the barn owl and Aanya the snowy owl. Redwood believed they should treat the falcons with hatred but Aanya believed peace was an option.
In the end, Redwood won the argument, and the owls invited the falcons and their leader Pine to a clearing where they announced their view on the new neighbors. They announced they would not be friendly, but to prove they were the rightful owners, they declared a series of games.
Just as they were about to officially announce the games officially open, a magnificent stag appeared from the shadows. Chief and Pine stood in awe of this beautiful creature, but something was different about this Stag.
Suddenly, the Stag transformed into Artemis, Greek goddess of the hunt. "Hello. My name is Artemis. I would like to be the judge of these games to see who truly owns this forest." The leaders both agreed, and the games had finally opened.
In the first game, Aanya, the snowy owl and Oak a falcon competed for the strongest of mind. There were a series of puzzles to test the bird's intelligence and they were given a time limit. Aanya finished with minutes to spare but Oak didn't finish in time. So the owls took the first win.
In the next game, it was a hunting challenge between Chief and Pine to see who could collect the most prey. Chief caught a large mouse and was proud of his work but was surprised when he noticed a huge pile of game behind Pine, so the falcons took the second challenge.
It was all tied up, and the last competition was all about speed and agility. For this competition, each group chose their best suited flyer. The owls volunteered Redwood and the Falcons, they chose not only their fastest but kindest individual Cloud. When Artemis gave the signal they took off, racing through the trees.
Although Redwood was fast, he didn't start when he was supposed to. The feeling of failure made him boil up inside like a scalding geyser. He had an evil thought in his head and all he needed to do now was fly a little ahead of Cloud.
"Hey Cloud!" Redwood screamed while flying backwards,"You falcons are completely pathetic compared to us and we make your species look like a disgrace to Artemis." Cloud did not reply because she was pure of heart and mind, unlike Redwood.
While Redwood was not paying attention and still mocking Cloud and the Falcons, they were nearing the Owl's roost where Chief was caring for the owlets.
As Chief was turning to leave, Redwood slammed into him sending brown feathers flying and Cloud screeching for help.
But by the time Cloud returned with Artemis, both owls were already dead.
In light of the unfortunate event, Artemis gathered the Owls and Falcons to teach them a lesson."Listen! This sort of behavior is unacceptable, especially when it causes the loss of life. I declare, to prevent something like this from ever happening again, I banish the owls to the shadows of the night where they will live for all of eternity."
The owls, taking a final look at their sunny abode flew to a different forest but decided to split up Aanya and the snowy owls flew up North where the frost is thick and the weather is unforgiving from which they never returned.
Grain, a barn owl, flew the rest of the barn owls to barns all over, where there was an abundance of mice and was a cozy abode. The barn owls never returned.
Lastly, the great-horned owls decided to stay in the forest, their home, where they would hunt under the cover of night, waiting for their next victim.
Artemis felt sad to see the owls apart and hiding behind the shadows of midnight. But she thought to herself, "They deserve the punishment. If I let them out of it now I'd be more dum than a toadstool. After all, the world won't know the difference."
To this day, owls still live under the shroud of night, hopping never again to see a falcon.
