On 5 October 1789 a mob descended on Versailles and demanded that the royal family decamp to Paris. The King was transferred to the Tuileries Palace, before attempting to flee in June 1791. Arrested in Varennes, he was brought back to Paris. Where he was charged with high amounts of treason by the National Convention which would amount to the sentence of death. King Louis XVI would be executed by guillotine on January 21st, 1793.

On 14 July 1789, a state prison on the east side of Paris, known as the Bastille, was attacked by an angry and aggressive mob. The prison had become a symbol of the monarchy’s dictatorial rule, and the event became one of the defining moments in the Revolution that followed. This would mark the birth of the French Revolution.
In the Summer of 1789, the Declaration of Rights of Citizens and Men was established. Inspired by Britain and America, it was a written expression of rights for the citizens of Men. The declaration addressed Freedom of speech and press was declared, and arbitrary arrests were outlawed. The Declaration also asserted the principles of popular sovereignty, in contrast to the divine right of kings that characterized the French monarchy, and social equality among citizens, eliminating the special rights of the nobility and clergy.
