Storyboard Text

  • At 8 years old, Frederick Douglass was sold to the Hugh Auld family. There, his mistress kindly commenced to teach him the alphabets. However, Mr. Auld found it threatening to see a literate slave so he put an end to Douglass' this. Nonetheless, mistress, in teaching him the alphabet, had given him the inch, and no precaution could prevent him from taking the ell.
  • Douglass did not give up; he befriended all the little white boys whom he met in the streets and converted them into his teacher. Reading was a blessing and curse for Douglass—it was a newefound freedom that exposed him to his wretched condition. As days went on, Douglass felt more and more powerless.
  • We would be glad to!
  • I will exchange this bread for that more valuable bread of knowledge.
  • All Douglass ever thought about from those days onward was freedom. When Douglass was 12, he read a book titled "The Columbian Orator". This book showed Douglass the power of eloquence and truth over the conscience of even a slaveholder. He saw nothing without seeing freedom, heard nothing without hearing it, and felt nothing without feeling it.
