- Gene and Finny's absence from the dinner was observed. So the following morning, they got visited by Mr. Prud'homme for where they were.
- "We had been swimming in the river, Finny explained; then there had been a wrestling match, then there was that sunset that anybody would want to watch, then there'd been several friends we had to see on business-"(Knowles 21).
- " 'The real reason, sir, was that we just had to jump out of that tree. You know that tree...' "(22).
- Finny is telling the truth to Mr. Prud'homme about why they didn't show up. However, he's being a bit more dramatic. Mr. Prud'homme just laughed and left after Finny was done.
- Mr. Prud'homme had left and now Finny and Gene were going to get ready. Finny changed his shirt into this very pink shirt.
- " 'What's that thing?' "(24).
- " 'It makes you look like a fairy!' "(24).
- " 'This is a tablecloth,'..." (24).
- Finny is explaining to Gene why he is wearing the pink shirt to calm Gene. Telling him it relates to the bombing on Central Europe.
- " '...I'm wearing this as an emblem.' ...'I was reading in the paper that we bombed Central Europe for the first time the other day.' "
- No one had asked about the shirt, until Mr. Patch-Withers came up to him after history. Gene was beginning to envy Finny as he watched him. "...Phineas could get away with anything." (25).
