- The Treaty of cotdoba
- After a crushing defeat at the Battle of Calderón Bridge on January 17, 1811, Hidalgo fled north, hoping to escape into the United States. He wascaught on March 21 and executed by a firing squad on July 30, 1811, at age 58.

- Agustin de Iturbide (1783-1824) was a Mexican politician and soldier whofought during the Independence War, held a major role in ending the War after achieving independence from Spain, and became Emperor of Mexico
- himself compelled to sign the Treaty of Córdoba on August 24, 1821. The treaty officially ended New Spain's dependence on Old Spain, renamed the nation the Mexican Empire, and declared that the congress was to elect an emperor if no suitable European prince could be found.

- The War of Independence cost Mexico a great deal. After gaining independence in 1821,the country was left in a poor state. Agricultural, mining and industrial production had fallen during the war, and over half a million Mexicans had died. As a new country, Mexico was struggling internally to achieve nationhood.
