In the forest, there are color variations in the species of caterpillar.
The trees of the forest are same shades of medium brown. There are three shades of caterpillar: a lighter caterpillar, a darker caterpillar, and a medium shade caterpillar.
The caterpillars are preyed on by woodpeckers in the trees. The medium shade of caterpillar is preyed on significantly less since their more extreme shaded counterparts stick out against the tree bark.
It becomes advantageous to have the more average, middle ground trait for the caterpillars. Those with more extreme colors are more easily hunted in this environment.
The survival of the intermediate phenotype among the caterpillars shows their higher fitness in this environment due to stabilizing selection pushing away from the two extreme phenotypes. The brown(intermediate) caterpillars are able to survive to reproduce and become most common in the population, leading to evolution.
