Grigori Rasputin was a man who originally was born as a peasant in Siberia. He later built his way up in the country and made his way to the czars household after claiming he could heal his son. When czar Nicholas II left to command the troops in the war, he left his wife in charge and many citizens believed this man, Rasputin, was influencing the czarina’s decisions.
In March of 1917 workers led a strike against the czar and at first soldiers were ordered to shoot at the protesters. Soon, the soldiers, instead of shooting at the men and women protesting, actually joined the protest. The revolution forced czar Nicholas to abdicate from his throne. The duma, set up by the czar a while back to help the people, set up a provisional government which didn’t exactly do a great job.
Lenin was a man who was born in Russia and was against the czars rule in Russia. He was later exiled to Western Europe and became a leader of a group called the Bolsheviks. They later returned to Russia and led a campaign to take over Russia. He was actually successful and was able to gain power over the provisional government currently in place.
After the Bolsheviks take power in Russia, there is civil unrest in the country as there are still people who believe that a democracy or even the old Russian monarchy would’ve done better than communism. This unrest resulted in a civil war with the reds, communists, and the whites, anti communist who were supported by other powers such as the US, the UK, France, and Japan.
After Lenin took power a time period began called the red terror occurred when anyone who was though to have been conspiring against Lenin was hunted down and executed without a trial. This was usually carried out by the Cheka as they were Lenin’s secret police who would execute Lenin’s evil deeds.
Lenin died in 1924 from an illness caused by a previous assassination attempt on him. Before he died he specificity stated that he did not want Joseph Stalin to take his place. This, however, was not how things played out as Stalin eliminated anyone who stood in his way of becoming leader such as Leon Trotsky who had to escape to Mexico. After Lenin died, Stalin became the new leader of the Soviet Union.
