La Salle was a French explorer who is best known for his exploration of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico in the late 17th century. He was born in 1643 in Rouen, France, and became a Jesuit priest at a young age. However, he soon left the priesthood and began exploring the North American continent. In 1682, he reached the mouth of the Mississippi River and claimed the entire Mississippi Valley for France, naming it Louisiana in honour of King Louis XIV. La Salle is also credited with establishing the first European settlement in what is now the state of Illinois, and with exploring the Great Lakes region. His expeditions were instrumental in expanding France's influence in North America.
