This scene is set in a dark, forest at night. Betty, Abigail and Tituba are dancing by the fire when Reverend Parris, Betty's father, suddenly catches them. Their secretive behaviour sets the stage for the accusations of witchcraft that follow. This moment marks the beginning of the chaos in The Crucible.

Betty Parris is in a coma-like state. Reverend Parris, and his neighbours, Mr. Putnam and Mrs. Putnam are trying to investigate the cause of Betty's illness. Mrs. Putnam realises that Betty can't bear the Lord's name, when spoken in psalm. This gives rise of accusations of witchcraft.

Reverend Parris calls Reverend Hale, an expert in witchcraft theory and investigations. Reverend Hale questions Abigail about her involvement in supernatural activities. Abigail easily blamed Tituba for forcing them to dance, drink chicken blood and call upon the Devil. All individuals easily accept Tituba as the perpetrator since is Black and different from the rest.
