Week 3: Activity 2

Storyboard Text

  • To the Native Hawaiians, Mauna Kea is a sacred space. This is because of the connection between#160;Mother Earth and#160; Sky Father as they were said to meet at the summit of Mauna Kea, therefore showing historical importance.
  • I love it here mom and dad!
  • Moreover, Mauna Kea is also important to the Native Hawaiians because it is the burial ground of Na Alii and Kahuna, which were extremely important figures to the Native people.
  • But this is a sacred space! It is highly disrespectful to our community!
  • We are here because we will be constructing the Thirty Meter Telescope at the top of Mauna Kea and we have approval from the University of Hawaii Institute of Astronomy.
  • The definition of undue burden lacks equality between a specific community and the government which is what is happening. You are being ignorant of all the previous agreements made regarding Mauna Kea.
  • There is nothing we can do, we have approval and this is going to happen, we apologize for the inconvenience.#160;
  • There are enough telescopes here, there should not be a need for another one as this is a sacred place! We should be entitled to equal protection under the Establishment Clause because it is certainly not fair that people outside of our community get to make decisions for our sacred places. This is the same as someone destroying your favorite place, which holds an emotional value, I don't think you would be okay with that either!
  • Definitely! They made some good points.
  • I guess they are right, we should tell these arguments to our bosses and see what they think.
