King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette had lots of money and power in France. The clergy and the nobles (in the first and second Estate) also had lots of money and power.
The Third Estate was made up of poor people.#160; They had very little money, no land, and no power. They made up 97% of the population. In June 1789, the national assembly#160;was formed at a tennis court. Many people thought life would improve
1788 was a bad year for weather. France#160;experienced a terrible winter storms followed by drought and flood which destroyed the crops including the wheat harvest.
This meant that many of the third Estate began to protest.#160;There were rumours that the First and Second Estate were hoarding bread too. This made people very angry.
On 5th October 1789 the poissardes (fish lady) were angry at the king for having a party while the people were starving. The angry people attacked the castle cutting of the guards#160;trying to kill the queen.
This led to the king signing the declaration#160;of the rights of man and the citizen.
