- Street Sweeper

- With dreams of becoming a scholar, The Council decided to make him a street sweeper. When Equality was told this, he "felt the cords of our neck grow tight" (Rand 26). Even though Equality was disappointed he accepted the Life Mandate and became a street sweeper. 
- Chapter 1
- Equality finds a girl by the name of Liberty and immediately forms a crush on her. Even though Equality knows that he isn't allowed to talk to women, he starts to disregard the laws of society and begins sending her signals of hello.
- Chapter 2
- By experimenting with copper, zinc, and brine, Equality was able to discover electricity. This is where Equality decides to disregard "all laws and all things save our metals and our sites" (Rand 54). With this discovery, Equality realizes that there is so much that still isn't known about the world, and Equality will unmask all the secrets of the earth, even if he has to do it alone.
- Chapter 4
- The Golden One
- While working, Equality found a black hole in the ground, which was revealed to be a secret hatchet. Since The Council doesn't know about this hatchet, it's forbidden to explore it. The hatchet leads to an underground subway, which Equality realizes is from the Unmentionable Times, and decides to explore and learn more about it.
- A man had been burned at the stake with his tongue cut off for saying the Unspeakable Word. Seeing a man burned alive, fueled Equality's curiosity as The Saint's eyes were "begging us to gather that word and not to let it go" (Rand 51). Equality wondered what word The Saint spoke of, and preceded to embark on a journey for knowledge.
- Even though Equality and Liberty know they aren't supposed to be seeing each other, they decided to take things further and start talking to each other. Equality and Liberty preceded to exchange nicknames for each other, with Equality calling Libert, The Golden One, and Liberty calling Equality, The Unconquered, due to his nature and individuality that hasn't been conquered by society.
