I got a new dog so I will use positive reinforcement, by giving him treats when he does a behavior that I want in order to train him to do different tricks and tasks.
treat is given based on a fixed-ratio schedule to make sure that my dog will learn the wanted behavior.
Sit!(every other time that he listens and sits down, I will give him a reward to reinforce the behavior and after a few times, me saying sit will be a conditioned stimulus to the conditioned response of my dog sitting which means that acquisition has taken place.
Now, he will only receive a reward after he does the wanted behavior a random amount of times, it could be 1 or 5 or 10 responses before he gets a reward, this will ensure long term retention
Since my dog has already learned the wanted behavior, I will switch to a variable-ratio schedule for my reward giving to ensure that my dog retains the conditioned response since a variable-ratio schedule is the best schedule for long term retention.
I might only start doing the trick for the treat.
Since my dog has learned that me saying Sit or Stand has the meaning of him sitting or standing, he has now stored these words and what they mean in his semantic memory.
To make sure that my dog is not overwhelmed by this new training, I will incorporate the spacing effect in my training so that my dog is learning little by little everyday.
