A higher rank were the nobles , they were the vassels of the King but the lords of knights , peasants or surfs. The king would give land to the nobles so they could manage or care for the land. The nobles were persons close to the king (usually relatives and very good friends). In exchange, the Nobles were required to pay the monarch taxes (money and food) and support him in battle. The manors, which are bigger plots of land used for farming and containing small settlements, are how the nobles further divided the land.
