The 13th amendment was ratified (approved) in 1865 at the end of the Civil War.

The importance of the 13th amendment.
The 13th amendment abolished (banned) slavery in the United States and made slavery illegal (against the law).
When slaves in the South found out about the 13th amendment they were no longer forced to work for their masters (boss).
We are free to go!
Get back to work!
Newly freed slaves were now allowed to begin living their own lives without being told what to do by their masters.

Slave owners were not pleased when slaves left their plantations (a place where slaves worked).
Life for slaves after the 13th amendment.
Slaves had gained their freedom and had a chance to work and live where they wanted to.This was the first time slaves could make their own choices.
