Franklin D. Roosevelt came into office in 1933 wanting to end Americas experiment with imperialism and began unwinding US control over Cuba. The US helped Cuba win independence from Spain during imperialism.

WHO SUNK THE USS MAINE?1889
The Maine explodes in Havana Harbor, killing 266 men. According to the US Navy, the explosion was caused by the denotation of a mine under the ship. Majority of the American public expressed little doubt that Spain was responsible and called for a declaration of war.

The "Rough Riders" was the name given to the First US Volunteer Calvary under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt. It composed of cowboys, miners, law enforcement, officials, and college athletes. The Rough Riders played a key role in the outcome of the Spanish-American War by assisting the american forces in forming a ring around the city of Santiago de Cuba.

The Phillippine American War lasted three years and reulted in the death of over 4200 American and 20,000 Filipino combatants. The US drive to extend influence across the Pacific instigated a Phillippine American War. Fighting broke out on February 4, 1899 and eventually far exceeded that against Spain

Theodore Roosevelt negotiated the Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty giving the US control of the canal zone. Work under US supervision began in 1904 and the Panama Canal was completed in 1914. Tens of thousands of people mostly labourers from Barbados, Martinque and Guadelupe worked on the project.
