- In 1854 America attempted to buy Cuba from Spain, Spain stated that they would rather see Cuba sink at the bottom
- Jose Marti is a Cuban poet and journalist and was kicked out of the country at 16, trying to free Spain

- On February 15, 1898 the U.S.S Maine exploded, in Cuba, killing 236 people. They blamed it on Spain, Yellow Journalism started the war.
- The Spanish-American War was the aftermath of the internal explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba. The Rough Riders a volunteer group of cavalry led by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War. They were famous for a victorious charge at the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba. U.S. newspaper made Teddy Roosevelt a hero.
- On December 10, 1898 the United States and Spain met in Paris to agree on a treaty, they gave away Guam and Puerto Rico and then sold Philippines to the United States for 20 million dollars
- But, how could the United States take over another country if they believed in democracy and they also sought to Christianize the Philippnes
