  • Prince Siddhartha thought that the ascetic ways would bring him peace and happiness. The Prince decided to give up his old life and become an ascetic and find enlightenment. One night, Siddhartha went into the area where the ascetic people were. He only wore a simple robe and kept only a small bowl for gifts of food. They fasted for many days at a time. Some people say that he was so skinny that he could touch his stomach and feel his backbone.

  • Siddhartha has learned that giving up his pleasure did not bring enlightenment. Instead, he would seek a "middle way" to reach enlightenment. Siddhartha walked until he found a tree that would be known as the Bodhi tree. He promised to meditate under the tree until he reached enlightenment. He meditated throughout the night about the nature of reality and how to reach nirvana. While meditating, he saw the importance of karma, and eventually saw how to gain freedom from the endless cycle.
