One Major theme of " The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that "Mankind is its own worst enemy". One example that supports the theme is when charlie shoots Pete Van Horn, thinking it was his enemy but in reality it was just his friend. This shows that he was so quick to think that the dark mysterious figure was his enemy. Next, another example that supports the theme is when charlie gets chased into his house after getting accused of being the monster. This shows how people will turn on you over a small accusation thinking something your really not. Lastly, one evidence piece that supports the theme is when they all turn on each other, because the lights were flickering in the house. This shows how people will not trust each others accusations which will lead to bigger situations such as fighting with each other. These are examples show how they match with "Mankind is its worst own enemy."
