  • Petition of Rights (1628)
  • Petition of RightsKIng could not jail people without a good reasonking could not make taxes without Parliament’s approvalking could not keep his soldiers in people’s home & could not use army to maintain order during peacetime 
  • Charles I executed (1649)
  • Oliver Cromwell serves as military dictator (1653-1658)
  • Parliament got fed up with Charles I because he only called Parliament when he needed money, so they signed the Petition of Rights as protection and a form of checks and balances. This event contributed to England’s shift from an absolute monarchy to a limited monarchy because it introduced the idea of Checks and Balances. The Parliament didn’t the king to have “divine right or power”!
  • James II becomes heir (1685)
  • Charles was convicted of treason because he fought with Parliament. He claimed the lives of thousands and ultimately his own. Charles believed in the Divine Right of Kings. He taxed people for money to pay for the navy, he fined people who had not obeyed old forgotten laws, and he took his soldiers to peoples homes and used his army to maintain order during peacetime. Charles was an absolutist so by convicting him of treason, divine right of power, or absolutism was eliminated.

  • Oliver Cromwell became the lord Protector of England following Charles I’s execution. He was a strong leader and won the Civil War. Oliver contributed to England’s shift from an absolute monarchy to a limited monarchy by protecting England from the divine rule of Charles by ultimately executing him. He didn’t use democracy, instead he became a military dictator. His policies had alienated much of the country.

  • James II ignored Parliament’s religious laws, James appointed Catholics to government and university positions. This conflicted with shifting England into a limited monarchy so they kicked out James II and appointed Mary to the thrown. 
  • The Glorious Revolution was a collection of event of 1688-1689. It was encouraged by Parliament to invade. James Li flees England leading to a peaceful transition of power. In result Parliament swore an oath that they would govern the people of England. Parliament passed the Bill of Rights. This passage made it clear the Parliament was in control resulting in a peaceful limited government.
