  • Toussaint Louverture was a former slave who became the leader of the revolution. He was a brilliant military leader who led Hatie's fight for independence while having the power to unite the slaves to fight together.
  • COME BROTHERS LETS FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE
  • About 500,000 of the 570,000 people living in Haiti were slaves. With 40,000 people being white it made it easier for slaves to revolt. In both France and Haiti, rulers were ignorant of what was going on regarding slavery. Saint Domingue was the sugar capital of the world but its people saw none of the wealth.
  • As a result of the 7 years of war. Napoleon needed money to reconstruct France’s empire and looked towards Saint Domingue to get it. He reinstated slavery and his brother-in-law, Leclerc, attempted to take away the guns of former slaves. This started a massive war in which France had no chance of winning, all white Leclerc contracted Yellow Fever.

  • The Battle of Vertieres ensued which occurred on November 18, 1803, between the Haitians led by Jean-Jacques and the French army under General Rochambeau. This was the last major battle in the Haitian Revolution in which the Haitians were victorious, reclaiming their rights.
