  • Hi Deena, you're finally here. I haven't seen you in a long time, how are you?
  • Hi Mia, I'm fine. Yes I have been a bit busy lately. My team and I are in the planning with several NGOs to go to Palestine.
  • Palestinians in Gaza are suffering because of attacks from Israel. It still happens to this day. Recently a journalist from Al Jazeera media was shot by Israeli soldiers while reporting on an Israeli military raid.
  • Palestine? Why do you want to go there?
  • Really? This is very shocking news! Who is the journalist? Why did I not know about this attack?
  • The journalist is named Shireen Abu Akleh. She is a veteran Al Jazeera reporter. Every media should cover this news, especially the media in Malaysia as she is our Muslim sister. However, only a few media outlets covered it, causing many Malaysians to be unaware of this attack, including you.
  • True Mia, there is a declaration on the safety of journalists and media personnel in situations involving armed conflict and it was signed on January 20, 2003 by Reporters Without Borders. The purpose of this declaration is to remind warring parties of international humanitarian law to protect journalists and media personnel.
  • The media should play a big role in this news in order to raise public awareness and encourage crackdowns to protect the protection of human rights, including justice. As far as I know, shouldn't journalists or health workers not be killed during a war?
  • I agree with you, not only the media but the Palestinians are also entitled in the context of human rights, freedom of movement, the highest standard of health attainable, family life, education, employment and participation in public life.
  • So I feel the media should also reaffirm the prohibition of attacks on journalists and the news media about their duty in taking precautionary measures in attacks that could endanger their safety.
  • From what I heard, The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS) and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) working with leading human rights lawyers from Bindmans LLP and Doughty Street Chambers submitted the formal complaint to the ICC in early April 2022. The ICC’s Prosecutor’s Office (OPT) formally acknowledged receipt of the complaint on 25 April 2022. The complaint which alleges war crimes against journalists by Israel’s security forces will now be considered by the OPT and could lead to a formal investigation and prosecution.
  • I can’t imagine the misery they have to face all the time. The Palestinians people deserve to be protected by other country. Did they take any action to uphold justice for their journalists?
