  • STORY OF CHANGE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
  • My name is Sharleen and this is my story. I have always been an extrovert, drawing my energy from people, making friends. When it comes to school, my family and generally people around me have always told me how smart I am and if I just put a little more effort, I can do wonders. I never paid any heed to those snarky comments and lived on with my life doing the bare minimum in school . This worked well for me until the 10th grade. As I lived in India, we had something called "board exams." These were nationwide tests every student had to give and it determined what college and what kind of education you will get. I took this very lightly and did not study till the very end. Time came for my exams and the panic, the anxiety got to me. Couple of exams went by and I was not acing them.
  • Time came for my Geometry exam, the exam I dreaded the most, specially because of the teacher who taught the subject. As soon as I saw the exam, I started hyperventilating, there was so much I did not know. I came up with an idea, I thought I would just take the part I did not use on the answersheet home because I was scared. I rolled it up and put it in my pockets. As soon as I got home, I got a call from my school asking for the paper. I lied and told them I left it with the rest of my exam. They called me back to school. I went with my mom. My principal sat me down and asked me again. I lied to her face. After a few seconds , they showed me a video recording of me putting the paper in my pocket. I did not understand that it was a crime to do so as it was a government exam. I cried and was inconsolable. Everyone was disappointed in me. I was disappointed in myself.

  • I was devastated by this incident. My mother consoled me and told me this can be where I try to change my habits. And so I did. I studied as hard as I can for the upcoming exams and get on doing so. I got As in my classes, excelled in high school and college. Now I am in my senior year of college, just about to graduate and I have a 4.0. This is a result of hardwork and dedication.
