- Jonas lives in a town where everything is the same no one can see color; no one knows their real parent or siblings, no one has free will or makes their own choices, no memories, and no strong feelings.
- Jonas is with his friends Fiona and Asher the day before graduation. Were they get assigned a job for the rest of their life. Jonas expresses his fear, but they reassure him and promise to be friends for life.
- At 12 years old, individuals get assigned a job and must do it or face strict punishment. Jonas got the most important job in the community and gets to be 1 of 2 people who can see memories, see color, and experience deep emotions. The giver touches his back and gives him his memories and other peoples memories.
- The Giver shows Jonas a release ceremony where Jonas's father is performing on an identical twin baby. Jonas realizes with horror that to be "released" means to be killed. After this, he convinces The Giver to create a plan where Jonas will escape and give everyone memories and different emotions.
- Jonas and the giver devise a plan for him to escape with Gabe and give memories and emotions back to his society.
- On their journey, it gets hard, and he experiences lots of bad emotions for real and not through memory. When hope is almost lost, he remembers a sled from his memories and rides it down to freedom.
