  • The illustration I chose was a representation of Osamu Dazai's fiction novel No Longer Human. In this novel, the character Yozo, talks about his view on what being a real human being are and he talks about the addictions of morphine and alcohol he goes through. My illustration is supposed to represent the visualization of how Yozo views society. The people in the background represent the other human beings and the body features quotes on how Yozo's views of society and and what his addiction was like. My project shows society behind Yozo; the head being what Yozo's mind thinks of human beings and the body representing his addictions.
  • Yozo feels as though human beings are just masking positive emotions in their lives. On page 37, Yozo's inner-thoughts share, "I am convinced that human life is filled with many pure, happy, serene examples of insincerity, truly splendid of their kind- of people deceiving one another without (strangely enough) any wounds being inflicted, of people who seem unaware even that they are deceiving one another"
  • Osamu Dazai's novel features the hardships of addiction and what the life of an addict is like. After a night where Yozo injures himself while drunk he tells Yoshiko (one of his wives; worker across the bar) "I'm giving it up. From tomorrow on I won't touch a drop." (130) But then on page 131, Yozo walks back into the store and says, "Yoshiko. I'm sorry. I got drunk."
