Storyboard Text

  • Americans wanted to build a Transcontinental Railroad to connect the West Coast with the rest of the United States.
  • It would make it easier to trade from East to West!
  • The issue was where it would be built. Should the railroad be built in the North of the South?
  • If we build the railroad North, we will have to decide which states are free and which states are slave.
  • Northerners wanted a route starting in Chicago. This would mean Congress would have to organize the territory west of the Missouri & Iowa (Kansas & Nebraska).
  • Everyone, the railroad should begin here, in Chicago!
  • Southerners wanted a Southern route starting in New Orleans and the repeal of the Missouri Compromise if the lands west of Missouri and Iowa were to be organized.
  • We must repeal the Missouri Compromise so we can gain more slave territory!
  • Stephen Douglass made a compromise. He divided the Nebraska territory in two: Kansas and Nebraska. Popular sovereignty meant Congress no longer decides whether slavery does or does not exist., the people decide instead.
  • The states being free or slave will be decided by you, the people!
  • The tensions between slave states and free states have gotten worse. Territory was opened up beyond the 36'30 line. The Compromise of 1850 was repealed. Territory above the line could now be slave states.
  • This is unfair! Slave states cannot exist above the line!
  • The Compromise has been repealed. We can decide to have slavery in the new territory.
