- NO DARK SKIN COLORS ARE ALLOWED
- The United States has a long history of people with dark skin being hated for having a different color of skin. The government separated public places with a place only for people that have dark skin and there would be another place for only light skin.
- I haven't done anything...
- Don't come near me or ill call the police!
- The problem was that people with white skin were having the best of the best while people with dark skin were treated terrible and they would get the worst of the worst treatment.
- This racism kept going and going until one man had enough of this. Martin Luther King, Jr. He disliked how people who looked liked him kept getting treated like rubbish. He wanted this to stop he wanted people of all different colors of skin to have the same rights as white people . He wanted everyone to be united . In 1963 he lead the March on Washington DC to protest.
- From so many protests, Martin Luther King was repeatedly sent to prison. He would go to prison 29 times, He was arrested for acts of civil disobedience.
- On August 28, 1963 at the March of Washington he gave a speech "I Have Dream" . This speech was the one that changed how everyone was living. He spoke, "I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be engulfed, every hill shall be exalted and every mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains and the crooked places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together." The message he was trying to give out from this speech was that everyone and everywhere people should all have the same opportunity no matter how they looked or how they dressed and how different they were.
- After the speech Martin Luther King was known to many more people than before. The speech made Congress move faster in passing the Civil Rights Act which gave dark skinned people the same rights. However from that time until now, there is still hate and discrimination happening. Black Lives Matter was created to educate and send a message that more work needs to be done to help them to be treated equally like the rest of us.
