  • So I've killed him.
  • Mary Maloney, six months pregnant, is waiting for her husband Patrick to arrive home from work. She spends her time waiting by knitting. Patrick is a police officer, and he arrives home at 5 pm every day.
  • Falling Action
  • Goodnight, Mrs. Maloney
  • Patrick arrives home, and Mary is excited to see him. She makes him a drink, and she asks him about dinner. Patrick announces that he has something to say to Mary.
  • Falling Action
  • Why don't you eat up that lamb that's in the oven.
  • Mary's reaction is one of shock. She travels down to the basement to get dinner, a leg of lamb. Upon her return, her reaction to the announcement is to hit her husband over the head with a frozen leg of lamb, thus killing him.
  • Resolution
  • Probably right under our very noses. What you think, Jack?
  • Mary, in order to cover her tracks, goes to the local grocer to purchase food for the dinner she was making for her husband. Before she leaves, though, she rehearses her speech. Sam the grocer does not notice anything strange.
  • Thank you, Sam.
  • Her plan to leave the house provides the perfect alibi for someone to come into the house and kill her husband. She calls the police and tells them her story. They travel to the grocer to verify her story.
  • Mary asks the police to eat the lamb. The police, unbeknownst to them, end up eating the murder weapon. Mary gets away with the murder of her husband.
