Storyboard Text

  • On August 24th, 1814 a British army attacked Washington, D.C and burned several buildings including the White House. President Madison had to run for his life, but Dolly Madison was able to save some national treasures including a painting of George Washington. The British had to run away after because a tornado came.
  • No! At least I saved some artifacts.
  • By the middle of 1813 the British blockaded America's ports. This meant no person or trade could come in or out. Merchants in New England and Federalists wanted to avoid the blockade, but it was inevitable once the war started.
  • Why!?!
  • No one can leave!
  • On January 8, 1615, 7,500 British troops attacked New Orleans. The city was protected by a diverse group including Native Americans, free African Americans, and even pirates. The militia was led by Andrew Jackson. The battle was the greatest victory of the war and about only 20 Americans were killed or wounded. The war was over before the battle, but the news had not reached America yet.
