- what are you guys going to do for your science presentation ?
- I'm doing extraction of iron metal. Did you know that it is extracted all over the world
- Woah!
- Iron is so cool! how does it get mined?
- well, the extraction of aluminum takes place in three main stages. concentration of ore, extraction of metal from it and purification.
- I'm hungry.
- Yes, but surely there's more to it then that.
- The process begins with the concentration of iron through calcination and roasting. It removes the water and impurities like sulphur and carbonates. It is then fed in blast furnace where the extraction takes place. The purpose of it is to reduce the concentrated ore into its liquid metal state.
- Yeah, but what is the purest iron ?
- Wrought iron is the most purest iron commercially available and is prepared from cast iron by heating it in a furnace lined with hematite
- The mining of iron ore is highly energy intensive and causes air pollution in the form of nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide from diesel generators, trucks and other equipment. The mining of iron ore also causes water pollution of heavy metals and acid that drains from the mines.
- nice! but with all that information what is iron really used for?
- Most is used to manufacture steel, used in civil engineering (reinforced concrete, girders etc.) and in manufacturing. It is used for pipes, valves and pumps have a huge variety of applications including bridges, electricity pylons, bicycle chains, cutting tools and rifle barrels.
