  • George Washington's Quarters
  • Cold weather was approaching rapidly, and the army needed to move. George Washington chose valley forge on the Schuylkill river 20 miles NW of Philadelphia. Valley forge was easily defensible, given its high ground and being near the river. But it was still close enough for Washington to keep an eye on the British.

  • Soldiers Quarters
  • The army's engineers built about 2000 huts. 1200 to 1400 had to use them. The huts were housed along the military street, they got material from the forest near. Each hut took about a week to build. Washington ordered all the huts to have two windows, and defense trenches protected them.
