- In 1498 Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer discovered the sea route to the Indian subcontinent.He reached Calicut with his crew. The Portuguese where the the first to arrive in in the Indian subcontinent for trade purpose. They built trading centers at Cochin, Calicut and Cannanore and begin to trade in spices, textiles, perfumes, precious stones and other items.
- After Portuguese, the Dutch came to the the subcontinent and established trading centres. They came from Holland now in the Netherlands. The British merchants in England formed the English East India company in 1600 CE. At that time Queen Elizabeth I was the the queen of England and Ireland. With permission the company begin to trade with India. Mughal emperor gave permission to the company to set up their first trading center at Surat
- The European trading companies wanted to expand their trade and bring more regions in subcontinent under their control. As a result a sense of rivalry emerged among trading companies especially between French and English East India company. This rivalry resulted in a a clash between the two companies and finally the French were defeated. The French were allowed to keep only Pondicherry.
- The French from France also set up their trading companies at Pondicherry and Chandernagor
- The British army and nawaabs army fought at Battle of Plassey in Bengal in 1757 CE. Siraj-ud-Dahal was defeated and killed the Battle of Plassey
- In 1764 CE Indian ruler fought another battle called the Battle of Buxar. The Nawab of Bengal and Mughal emperor shah Alam fought the battle . The British defeated the Indian rulers and Bengal came under their control under their control
