You are going to be my bishop! But let me warn you, I haven't told the pope yet.
That's cool with me!
I'm going to elect you to be a rival bishop to Henry IV's Bishop!
MUAHAHAHHA!
You don't even want to know what I will do...
If you don't stop, I will remove you of your pope position!
Pope Gregory VII asserted that the Church could depose or remove from office any public official from office. Including bishops and emperors. King Henry IV ignored these rules and elected his own bishop.
NOOOOO!
I told you!
After Henry elected his own bishop, Gregory decided he would elect a rival bishop, who would probably oppose Henry's objectives.
WE DON'T SUPPORT YOU!
Once Pope Gregory elected his rival bishop, King Henry IV tried to remove Gregory from his pope position, which turned out to be a terrible idea.
When Henry tried to remove Gregory of his Pope position, he excommunicated him the the Church, which affected Henry because he was a religious person.
After he was excommunicated from the Church, he lost the support of his subjects and lost his power over the empire. He hoped to end his excommunication.
Desperate, Henry visited the Pope in an Italian castle. The pope wasn't going to forgive him that easily, so he left him out in the snow for 3 days before he forgave him. The dispute between the Pope and Henry IV still continued though.
Please let me in! I've been out here for days!
