  • India will become our land!
  • We have nowhere to go!
  • Due to the partition of India, millions of people were forced to move because they lived on the wrong side of the border. This was one of the largest migrations of people in history. About 12 million people became refugees and many died. Violence rose between groups of Muslims and Hindus.
  • Gandhi began visiting troubled areas to end the violence between India's religious groups. On January 30, 1948 he was on a vigil in New Delhi. A Hindu extremist, Nathuram Godse, shot and killed Gandhi because he disagreed with his tolerance for Muslims.
  • Independent Pakistan had two parts, East Pakistan and West Pakistan. East Pakistan had much less political and economic power. In 1970, the Bhola Cyclone hit East Pakistan causing more devastation. Many died and more became homeless, without enough relief from the government.
